Featured Work - Muskox

Maquette

Of course, I must research…the anatomy of a muskox is not something that comes instantly to mind.  But the feeling of the creature and what I want to say about it is very clear. I want to speak of  the animal’s powerful  beauty, the odd putting together of elements that makes it a recognizable symbol in our world. Lifesize, of course…male, …moving of course.
I use books, often children’s books,…when I was a child I read every single book in the Lawrence Park Library from A to Z, and they still have wonderful illustrations.
I use  photographs wherever I find them and keep a large resource pile that I refer to over and over.  I seek skeletal drawings,  videos and the internet..visuals and reading.
I find out where I might actually see the animal in real life to watch them move and learn typical habit and behaviour so that I can crystallize it all three dimensionally in my head.
At this point he is essentially complete, except for his colour. He has been sandblasted, and now will endure the elements and the Corten weathering steel will marinate to true muskox brown.

The Muskox is currently being showcased in Toronto, just outside the doors of Tilley Endurables, at Don Mills and Barber Greene Drive.
