The greater Georgian Bay Reptile Awareness Program wants to hear about your reptile sightings!

This program is joint initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Midhurst and Parry Sound districts and Ontario Parks' Central Zone. This program is also supported by Georgian Bay Islands and Bruce Peninsula National Parks, Midland-Penetanguishene Field Naturalists Club, local Stewardship Councils, Toronto Zoo, and Friends of Killbear, Wasaga and Awenda Provincial Parks. The greater Georgian Bay Reptile Awareness Program is dedicated to conserving and protecting seven reptiles in the Georgian Bay area.

These include the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake and Eastern Fox Snake which are considered threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). There are also four species of special concern: the Eastern Hognose Snake, Five-lined Skink, Spotted Turtle, and Wood Turtle. A seventh species, the Blanding's Turtle, is under review for designation.

Why the need for the Reptile Awareness Program?

1. The Georgian Bay area provides a significant portion of the Ontario range for these species.
2. Increased development in the region has led to the loss of reptile habitat.
3. Snakes are often killed unnecessarily because of fear, misinformation or superstition.
4. Reptiles are collected illegally for the pet trade.
5. The seven species are at risk of being extirpated from this area.
6. The reporting of sightings will provide valuable data on species distribution and help focus research efforts.
