Windswept Silhouette is a life-size figure, hand built of 1/8th inch Corten steel plate, rooted on a chunk of Muskoka granite. Corten, or 'weathering steel' is a nickle-steel alloy, which when exposed to the elements develops a dark 'patina', but will not corrode, making it ideal for outdoor welded sculpture. The sculpture is 9 1/2 feet tall in total, and weighs 4 1/2 tons. The sculpture took one year to complete.
It is, yes, a beautiful image. But it is also a powerful symbol that evokes emotion in every viewer. Windswept Silhouette is my legacy, one of my masterworks. Everyone who sees this piece loves it, for although it is certainly the recognizable silhouette of a windswept pine, it is a human response to the beauty of this place we live in; a lyrical, powerful leap of joy. I love it because it is an achievement in welded steel. My entire professional career has been centred in the little town of Gravenhurst, and Windswept Silhouette belongs here in Muskoka, where she now dances on a private estate.
I continue to work at my art and I will create many more sculptures. But when people finally look back at my life's work, this will be one of the sculptures that reflects my life in Muskoka as an artist, a welder, a woman.
